Machakos County is
one of the 47 counties of Kenya. Its capital is Machakos. Its largest town is
Machakos, the country's first administrative headquarters. The county had a
population of 1,421,932 as of 2019.
A few years ago, Kenya bid to host the CECAFA games and guess what reasons other countries’ federations gave for not giving Kenyans a chance; “Kenyans are heavy drinkers will not attend matches in the stadiums, they will fill bars and drink and our teams will play in empty stadiums!”
This wasn't a lie at all!
Yesterday, while
hosting the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Hon. Mutahi Kagwe and CAS Mwangangi, Machakos County
Governor H.E Dr. Alfred Mutua announced that he would relax his directive on
the distribution of alcohol within the county.
He however
reiterated that this will only happen to bars and pubs that actually open
(after meeting the reopening guidelines set aside by the Ministry of Health)
and not those that illegally sell alcohol through the back door.
“We stopped
temporarily the distribution of alcohol because pombe ilikuwa inakuja,
inasimama nje ya bar, bar imefungwa lakini stock zinaletwa kila siku,” Dr Mutua
said. “Tukaona kuna shida, so we are planning to relax it so that now alcohol
vehicles can come but not to closed bars. So that other people can have their
drinks as we really keep distance.”
Hon. Kagwe on his
part appreciated the role devolution played since the inception of the new
constitutions 2010 and said the strides made by county governments in
preparations to curb the spread and treatment of the novel coronavirus would
not be possible if not for devolution.
“The Central Government could not have done all this. We can tell from how things were before devolution” he said.
