NHIF and NSSF are statutory deductions for all employed Kenyan citizens. Unemployed or those in private business ventures can also pay on their own at a rate of KSh. 500 a month or KSh. 6,000 annually.


Unlike in the past where one was required to walk to their offices to register or get the account details or remit contributions, things have now been made easier. One can now check their contributions via email, through the website, and even better, via SMS.


A. How to check NHIF status via SMS

  1. Go to the main menu on your mobile phone and compose a message
  2. At the message space, type ‘ID’, a space followed by the ID number or the Passport number if          applicable. E.g ID 12345678.
  3. Send the message to 21101.

NHIF will process your status request and send you a confirmation message.


The processing fee is only KSh. 10.

B. How to check NSSF status via SMS

  1. Send the word “NSSF” to 6773 and follow the instructions provided.
  2. Type NSSF, NSSF No, Date of Birth, Full Names and send to 6773.

    Important : Leave space after typing each detail.

  3. You will receive a PIN (after they validate their data)
  4. Type Bal, your new PIN and send to 6773
  5. View your statement balance.
